IPVN conducts formal examination and substantive examination of design patent applications. Designs can include a product-specific look embodied by three-dimensional construction, lines, colors, or a combination of these elements. There is no need to submit a request for substantive examination, and substantive examination begins automatically within six months of the disclosure of the application.

1. Electronic version of pictures or photos, including: front view, back view, left view, right view, top view, bottom view and three-dimensional view.

2. A brief description in Vietnamese, including product name, purpose, design points, etc.

3. Power of attorney: signed or sealed by the applicant.

4. Priority documents: only for patents claiming priority under the Paris Convention.

5. Name, nationality, address and other information of the applicant and designer; priority information (if priority is claimed).

6. If an assignment is involved, proof of assignment is required.
