German design patent examination is only a formal examination. DPMA first checks that all documents required for the application (e. g. applicant's details, design representative and product description) have been received. Secondly, the application is examined for compliance with the legal requirements, in particular whether the statement meets the formal requirements. In addition, the design department will check whether the applied design really constitutes a design, that is, whether it shows the specific color, pattern and shape of the product. General ideas, concepts or designs are not protected in principle. Designs must conform to public policy and generally accepted moral principles and must not constitute improper use of any national emblem or other emblem of public interest.

3. protection period

protection period is initially five years (30 months if publicity is delayed). It can be renewed up to four times, up to a maximum protection period of 25 years.

1. Application form, which shall state the Chinese and English names and addresses of the designer and the applicant, the date of submission, the name of the invention and the priority date; 2.
