In Portugal, trademarks may be registered for words, images, drawings or sounds, as well as combinations of these elements. The types of registered trademarks are: text trademarks, graphic trademarks, sound trademarks, names of origin, geographical indications, group trademarks, and certification trademarks. The Portuguese trademark adopts the Nice classification and accepts multiple applications for one standard.

4. Review Form

Portuguese trademark applications are subject to examination with respect to form requirements and trademark distinctiveness. A search for prior trademarks was also conducted. After the formal examination is completed, the trademark will be published as well as the opposition. If there is no objection or the objection is not established during the announcement period, the examiner will conduct a substantive examination; if the examination fails, a notice of rejection will be issued and a reply will be required within the specified time; after the substantive examination is passed, the trademark will be approved for registration and a trademark registration certificate will be issued to the applicant.
