form of review. Upon acceptance of a trademark application by the Nigerian Intellectual Property Office, the trademark application is subject to formal examination only. The Registrar will make enquiries on the trademark application and the initial enquiries will be completed within 2 working days. The Trademark Registry will examine the trademark application to determine whether there are any prior conflicting trademarks or whether they are distinctive, etc., thereby excluding the registration of the trademark. If the audit is OK, the examiner will send a notice of acceptance to the trademark owner, usually within 3 weeks of the confirmation letter. After the examination is passed, the trademark will be published in the trademark journal. Within 2 months of the announcement, anyone can submit an objection to the announced trademark. During the objection period, if no third party objects to the trademark registration, or if the objection is resolved in favor of the applicant, the Trademark Registration Office will issue a registration certificate to the applicant.
